Users Discontinuing Anti-Obesity Jabs Put On Pounds Four Times Faster Compared to Those on Conventional Diets

Obesity treatment involves ongoing approaches.

Fresh analysis suggests that patients who discontinue new slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain reduced body mass much more quickly than those who halt traditional diet and exercise plans.

Findings released in a major health publication shows that while obese people frequently drop about a fifth of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the weight is regained at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.

"Users using such medications should be informed of the potential of quick rebound weight gain when the medication concludes," stated researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of recovery means a return to pre-treatment mass within about a year and a half.

Analyzing Therapies

The research, which reviewed dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the results of the injectable medications with conventional dieting.

The team note that people who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone generally see a more gradual weight regain—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.

The Reason for the Quick Rebound

Experts suggest the mode of action of the jabs explains the heightened regain.

The injections copy a natural hormone called GLP-1, which controls feelings of fullness.

"Sustained high doses of the hormone concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production may cause the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and could reduce responsiveness to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.

"Stopping of this medication results in hunger is unsuppressed, making overeating far more likely."

A Lifelong Condition?

The NHS advise the jabs for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

A number of clinicians say that, due to the high risk of weight regain, the treatment should be considered long-term.

This opinion is supported by drug manufacturers, who state that the results "emphasize the chronic character of excess weight," comparing it to managing conditions like diabetes.

Patient Accounts

Users who have come off the jabs describe a powerful resurgence of cravings.

"It felt as if a trigger activating and you become ravenous," said one woman.

This challenge is compounded if patients have not adopted lasting dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.

Significant Adoption

Survey data indicate that a significant number of people in the UK have used these injections in the last 12 months, with demand remaining high.

  • Adoption is more common among females than men.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest usage rates.
  • A large proportion obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.

In conclusion, clinicians caution that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful tools for weight loss, they are not a permanent cure and long-term success likely depends on combined lifestyle changes.
