A shadow economy for unapproved weight-loss drugs is being driven by TikTok fitness influencers and vendors on messaging platforms, according to new investigations.
Investigational Drug Acquiring Popularity Via Social Media
Retatrutide, which is still in clinical trials, is being advertised by social media influencers for its supposed weight-reducing properties. Viewers are urged to contact these accounts directly for supplier links, while also obtaining promotional offers.
Active Commerce on Social Networks
Additionally, a robust trade exists on Telegram, where communities with thousands of members share “before and after” photos, administration instructions and assertions of next-day British shipping. Sellers promote the substance there before directing customers to WhatsApp for transactions.
Learning About The Experimental Drug
Retatrutide is an experimental injectable developed by American pharmaceutical company Eli Lilly. The drug targets three gut hormones – GLP-1, GIP and pancreatic hormone. Preliminary studies suggest it could help patients lose up to a quarter of their body weight. Referred to as the “triple G”, the drug is being promoted online as the successor to Ozempic.
Healthcare Experts Voice Concerns
However, physicians and pharmacists have cautions that the distribution of what is still an unapproved drug in the United Kingdom is a cause for concern and could result in individuals injecting substances of uncertain source.
Several professionals stated the demand for retatrutide could be linked to the increasing price of licensed slimming treatments such as Mounjaro.
Legal Status and Implementation
Selling the unapproved drug on social media or messaging apps is prohibited in the United Kingdom, as it is an unapproved drug that must not be marketed or distributed for personal consumption under the British medical regulations.
Several content creators try to sidestep the rules by referring to the substance as a “research chemical” or citing it as “not for human consumption”. The substance is not a restricted drug, but advertising and supply can still violate pharmaceutical, advertising, and customer regulations, potentially leading to fines, legal action or prison.
Platform Response and Material Removal
Based on TikTok, the service has taken down violative content and banned associated hashtags and query recommendations. The organization said it was committed to maintaining the service safe and allocating resources in enhancing compliance measures.
Online Trading Operations
Research also found communities with up to 9,000 participants marketing retatrutide using the platform's integrated discovery tool, which functions like a public directory. Typing “retatrutide” immediately displays groups with thousands of members, populated with images of weight loss, glowing reviews and detailed guides for mixing or injecting at home.
Within minutes of entering one group, a vendor posted WhatsApp details, where most purchases take place. The vendor provided an instruction manual and guaranteed delivery within 48 hours. When asked whether the product was genuine, one vendor responded: “You can’t be sure.” Another shared a photo of a supposed laboratory certificate. None inquired about weight, health issues or past usage.
Item Information and Pricing
Within these groups, messages show black plastic parcels with postal service stickers, stating to contain fresh supplies. One communication stated: “It took eight of us to load them this morning.”
Buyers can select between dry substance containers, prepared at residence with sterile water, or ready-to-use pens usually sold at 160 pounds for 20mg. When asked how long a pen should last, sellers give conflicting responses varying between a several days to “depends on your body”.
Service Moderation and Safety Measures
A representative for Telegram stated it regularly moderated dangerous content on its platform including material that promoted the “misuse of controlled medications”. The organization added that it removed “millions of pieces of harmful content each day”.
Medical Expert Warnings
“People are administering substances they cannot confirm. Even if the science behind retatrutide is valid, these online versions may not include what they advertise,” said a pharmacy expert, the head of pharmaceutical services at Chemist4U.
Dr Crystal Wyllie of an online medical service connected the surge in interest to current cost increases for authorized slimming drugs such as Mounjaro. “With costs increasing, patients are using social media. But counterfeit injections are highly risky. You can’t be certain what’s contained or whether the environment they were produced in was sterile,” she said.
Her team has previously encountered patients harmed by self-injection from unverified sources. “We recognize the frustration, but purchasing from Telegram or communication platforms is taking chances with your health,” stated the doctor. “These substances could be impure or incorrectly dosed.”
Manufacturer Statement
A representative from Eli Lilly stated retatrutide was in third stage research studies and had not been evaluated or authorized by any regulatory agency anywhere in the world. “Therefore at this point no one can market [it] for personal consumption,” they explained, noting that any item “misleadingly claiming itself as a Lilly experimental product not yet approved … may expose users to possibly serious medical dangers”.
