They're Repeating in America What They Executed within Christianity

The Trump phenomenon's most illuminating and defining instances – not its most crucial, nor cruelest, nor most threatening, nor most foolish, but potentially its most enlightening – came earlier this autumn. In the course of several weeks, the US president began displaying the public his intentions for an ornate dance hall twice the size compared to the White House and then commenced solo dismantling the eastern section to construct it.

He has committed acts countless times more severe – the present calculation of deaths from his cuts to USAID is 600,000 and rising, and this week an analysis predicted his fossil fuel policies would result in fatalities another 1.3 million. However nothing as distinctive. No former leader would have attempted – truly, no former commander would have imagined – solo demolishing significant portions of the presidential residence in order to erect a Versailles-style party room, with the direct cooperation of numerous America's wealthiest, nearly all of which have business with the government.

We transitioned from 'the gentle will obtain the Earth' toward 'the meek shall die to cholera'

As disorienting as it is to observe the president try to upend the old idea about democracy and substitute it with its complete opposite, there remains a substantial portion of Americans who should not find it entirely new. This includes individuals like us – among senior generations a near majority – who were educated within mainstream Protestant traditions.

We have watched over the years while conservative evangelical congregations converted the Savior we learned about into the complete reverse of who we understood him to be. Fundamentally, they transformed an image of love into a figure of hostility who endorses exactly the harshness that he condemned in scripture; this has happened more slowly, over decades rather than months, however it is still disconcerting via comparable methods, a confusing personal impact for many of us.

A Harmful Christianity Gains Ground

So let me first describe the Christ from my upbringing, as conceptually the Savior is the core of any Christian faith, and since the fastest-growing cadre among Americans may possess limited understanding regarding him since they are atheists or doubters or religiously unaffiliated. I take no issue with any of these traditions, nor with different religions; however I believe that there are pearls of significant worth within Christian narrative.

It is decidedly definitely not the narrative of an authoritative monarch arising; instead, a baby is born to parents without shelter in a storage space, who are forced to hastily depart to another nation to escape secret police. The child matures in simple surroundings, a laboring woodworker; his teaching focuses on affection for other people, particularly for the disadvantaged – and not a sentimental love, but tangible care, shown by providing food and sheltering. Jesus' answer to violence is to offer the opposite cheek – not as a demonstration of compliant endurance, but as a method to educate the aggressor; his crime policy is that if someone steals your outer garment you must offer the person your additional clothing also.

The apparent and clear fact that Christ of the gospels calls for a type of profound affection centered on the impoverished has consistently rendered Christianity somewhat of a controversial faith: attractive to the general public, but due to its inherent radicalness needing to be contained. In the fifties it was contained by dilution – Protestantism was so dominant that it basically blessed current circumstances.

A Struggle for the Best Among Us

Hence I have become inspired to see the steadfast resistance against Trump develop in this past year. It has served as substantial consolation to help build the initiative that has demonstrated publicly in rally after rally, and appears to have motivated voters to participate in significant amounts in interim political contests. We will need to continue it, and with identical determination, with American flags throughout each rally and appeals to the highest qualities in US history.

We shall be interrogated ... how did you receive the foreigner? Did you receive him and welcome him or not?

The country is optimally secured, to put it differently, through connection to the best about American history, just as Christianity is optimally secured by reference to that which renders it special and wonderful, specifically the model of Christ. In both situations does it imply feigning the most negative of both America and Christianity was nonexistent; it signifies both modesty and faith, a mixture that serious American Christians should embrace.
