The Film 'Together' Has Debuted on Streaming, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Partnership.

Here's a challenge for long-term couples who enjoy horror films: Get comfortable with your significant other and view Together. The 2025 indie hit recently had its launch on a streaming platform via Hulu. On the surface, it may seem like conventional biological terror, but beneath Together exists a deep examination about the ways we decide to love our partners.

An Introductory Film Investigating Relationship Dynamics

Together is the debut feature-length film for director Michael Shanks. It showcases the real-life married couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie as a couple named Tim and Millie, partners that have stayed together for a decade. Having wed in reality in 2017, the two stars infuse a special spark to their roles, masterfully depicting both the strengths and weaknesses of a long-term relationship.

The plot commences when the couple transition from the big city to the country for professional reasons. A familiar narrative setup, admittedly, but that’s mostly where the conventions end. Together evolves into as much a psychological exploration of the partnership as it is a body horror flick.

A Supernatural Catalyst

While hiking near their new home, a violent storm occurs, and the protagonists tumble into an underground cave. After being trapped overnight there and eventually escaping, a mysterious influence takes hold of the couple. This force compels a otherworldly bond between them that goes exceeding emotional intimacy.

The whole movie is a methodically building horror experience, weaving in elements of hallucinatory nightmares, unsettling (but never too gross) physical transformations, and genuinely funny dialogue (sometimes during something disturbing). The director orchestrates these parts neatly and wraps them up in a consistently growing aura of dread.

Nuanced Portrayals

A significant portion of Together is solely the performances of its stars, and they skillfully illustrate countless layers to the partnership at the film's core. Millie's sense of self and emotional bond is suffering due to a distance. Her unspoken irritation of Tim for his unwillingness to focus on anything other than his floundering music career inexorably rises.

In contrast, Tim's character experiences isolation and separated by Millie, who’s the impetus they’ve relocated rural and distant from his social circle. He is terrified of the concept of totally forfeiting his personal autonomy in another person. This fear is further exacerbated by the circumstance he can’t drive and relies on Millie for getting around.

Shanks’ smartest move in Together never makes either of his characters the definite antagonist.

Both characters grapple with the sort of issues that come with long-term unions over a long period. At their core, they still love each other. They share moments of joy, comfort one another, and share intimately at times. But under the surface, there’s an inescapable undercurrent of doubt about their bond.

Symbolism and Metaphor

While the paranormal elements in Together represent these anxieties of unhealthy attachment and totally devoting oneself to a partner, the allegory never feels overly obvious or pretentious. Instead, these visceral horror elements offer a ideal counterpart to the relationship narrative. Both the horror and the drama serve the other in harmony.

A Divisive Ending

Together’s ending, which won’t be spoiled here, has left audiences divided on the story's concluding statement about unhealthy partnerships. It has been said that unattached audience members have interpreted the film as a powerful case for remaining unattached. On the other hand, certain partners who were in conflict found that the film ultimately assisted them reconcile.

If you are alone or with a partner, your own interpretation could potentially serve as a great barometer of how you view relationships. Will the conclusion inspire anxiety and horror, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you identify in one of the characters and yell at the screen, or simply look at your other half and utter, “I’d do that for you”?

No matter your reaction, Together is an test you can experience at this very moment.

Together is currently playing on Hulu at present.
