Tetris Couldn't Win at The Game Awards — A New Category Might Solve This

Each time a major prize-giving event nears, there’s always an outcry for introducing fresh award types to honor underappreciated efforts and satisfy the passions of followers with niche passions.

My colleague previously argued advocating for terror-themed awards. That would be fantastic. Equally deserving are tabletop games, which is someone's personal cause. But they will have to forgive me when I prioritize just as with other single-minded supporters, I possess a compelling case for why my demand remains most pressing and important of all. Here's the proposal: We need a category for puzzle games.

Categorizing Game Types

Organizing artistic expressions isn't exact; it remains highly personal, and inevitably spark debates and end in fuzzy definitions. This explains why film award organizations don’t do it. Yet it remains an unavoidable compromise in the world of gaming, showing incredible range they barely qualify as a single art form.

To recognize the complete range of interactive entertainment excellence to gain proper attention, while allowing diverse titles to compete fairly, classification by type becomes crucial.

Current Gaming Award Categories

The major gaming awards presently include award types recognizing Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Combat games, Simulation and strategy titles, plus athletic and racing experiences. Together, these award types effectively encompass many game types, making space possible for numerous titles.

Different situation exists for logic-based experiences. No suitable classification appears for their placement. Consider three of outstanding current releases, each quite distinct: the architectural riddles of one title, the pulse-pounding block-matching in a different title, thought-provoking social scenarios from additional release. Which classification works within current classifications? Simply put, no category fits.

Recognition Challenges

Many instances occur excellent brain-teasers released every year lacking appropriate categories during gaming ceremonies, if they accidentally match classification types such as Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, and the highly challenging Indie races.

  • A renowned logic title received no recognition completely in 2014
  • Another creative title was excluded that year
  • A beloved organization game got ignored in 2021
  • Only a few logic titles scraped into independent or mobile categories

Importance of Logic Titles

These are often modest productions, but the art of the puzzle game holds tremendous importance. Well-known matching games rank among most popular titles globally continuing this trend for over a decade.

The legendary block-stacking game challenges well-known building titles competing to become most purchased experience; it’s also in the running for top gaming experience. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks within interactive entertainment, while interacting with almost every other genre.

Proposal and Rationale

Logic titles wouldn't face this problem. One could readily select five nominees interesting, varied, worthy titles annually without trouble — perhaps, with difficulty, since numerous excellent many worthy titles.

To emphasize again, these represent titles without proper classification during prominent ceremonies. Puzzle game makers are working at the challenging frontier interactive creation, producing among most fundamental forms of gaming itself. Just like film action specialists, they merit acknowledgment. Don't make them wait 35 years.
